Wake Up Call NJ is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that exists to educate other New Jersey public school parents about their children’s schools and promote common sense solutions.

Our first step is to spread the word about what is really going on with our students.

We started Wake Up Call because the children of the Garden State deserve better. We are looking to shine a spotlight on the unfortunate reality that too many of our youngest learners in public schools are behind in math and reading…and too many of our recent graduates are forced to take remedial classes in college. We are not pointing a finger at teachers, principals or policymakers. Playing the “blame game” doesn’t help our children.

Our initial goal in launching Wake Up Call NJ is to raise collective awareness because, only through embracing the real challenges we face, can we come together to radically improve the academic and life outcomes of students in public schools across New Jersey. And, yes, together WE CAN FIX IT.

  • Laura Bilodeau Overdeck

    Laura Bilodeau Overdeck is the Founder and President of Bedtime Math Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to make nightly math as common and beloved as the bedtime story.

    She is the author of three best-selling children’s books published by Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, with the most recent named an Amazon Best Book of the Month.

    Laura serves on numerous non-profit boards in New Jersey, including the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.  Laura also co-founded the Overdeck Family Foundation in 2011 with the goal of providing all children the opportunity to unlock their potential.

  • Peter Shulman

    Peter Shulman is the former Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education, where he helped lead New Jersey to some of the country’s largest student achievement gains in math and reading. 

    Peter was recently the CEO of City Teaching Alliance, a non-profit, nationally recognized teacher preparation and development organization. Across his twenty years in his service to public schools, Peter has also served in leadership roles in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the Delaware Department of Education.
